Basics of git and github

Git is a version control system for tracking changes in source code. Its very useful for saving and sharing code especially if you accidenlty lose anything

Setup:

Open your terminal and ssh into the lexiqqq server, you should have been sent an email with your password

Run the following commands and enter your password when prompted


ssh [username]@lexiqqq.com
git init

Keep the cmd window open, we will need it later

Github:

Assuming you want to use github for your project, you will need to create an account

After making an account go to https://github.com/settings/tokens
click generate new token and choose the classic token
then change the expiration to whatever you want personnaly I use no expiration as it makes life easier although it is less secure
select the repo scope which will allow access to all private repos
finally generate the token

now create a new repository on github

Updating with git:

Go back to your terminal which is has access to the lexiqqq server and run the following commands


git add *
git commit -m "initial commit"
git push https://[github username]:[your github token]@github.com/[github username]/[repo name]

That last command is a little long and complicated so I reccomend saving it somewhere safe but remember to leave out the token if it's saved anywhere that could become comprimised

.gitignore:

Sometimes you will want to leave out a file from your git repo as it contains sensitive information to do this you will need a .gitignore file. We can do this by running the following commands and then editing the .gitignore file


touch .gitignore
nano .gitignore

add the names of any files you want to exclude to the .gitignore file. e.g sensitivedata.txt
then save the file using ^O and then exiting with ^X

pushing to github

whenever you want to save you site to github, run the following commands:

git commit -m "[your description here]"
git push
